stroboscope effect caused by perfect sync between rotor speed and frame rate in the camera. Note the tail rotor appears to be rotating slowly. Same thing, but instead of exact sync, the frame rate is a little slower or faster than the rotations per second of the tail rotor.
Anyone who has used a timing light on a car engine knows whats going on. It just looks so wierd because it is so perfectly sync'ed -- a rare accident of chance indeed.
